The surly green ogre may be getting a second lease on life with NBCUniversal's acquisition of DreamWorks Interactive. “Shrek's” 2001 breakout popularity has given life to four films that have given viewers young and old alike the pleasure of Mike Myer's hilarious performances with Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas.
Without a follow-up to the franchise since its 2010 installment “Shrek Forever After,” Mike Myer's fantasy persona may be getting edged out by more recent animated fantasy films such as “Frozen” and “Moana” in the eyes of its target market. Thankfully, DreamWorks Interactive's recent changing of hands may just have the project that the franchise needs to kickstart its popularity once again.
“Shrek 5” was confirmed to be in the works as early as 2017. In a report by Polygon, “Shrek 5” is looking to 2019 as the movie's release date. With the 2019 deadline nearing, there has yet to be any major marketing push for the “Shrek 5” movie. DreamWorks has yet to give the animated fantasy film an official exact target date.
Also in consideration of the 2019 target, “Shrek 5” does not have a current cast confirmed. There has been no official statement from either Mike Myers or Cameron Diaz if they will be reprising their roles as Shrek and Princess Fiona, respectively. Antonio Banderas has also not released any statements that he will be reprising his role as Puss in Boots for the potential fifth movie. But fans of the green ogre franchise can stay optimistic about “Shrek 5's” future with Eddie Murphy already confirming that he will be reprising his role as Donkey in an interview with ET Canada.
Eddie Murphy has also confirmed in an interview with CinemaBlend that the movie's producer, Jeffrey Katzenberg, is definitely looking towards a 2019 release and that a script has already been written for “Shrek 5.” With such details confirmed, fans of the franchise can look forward to “Shrek 5” definitely happening sometime in the near future.
