It has become very clear now that “Sherlock” season 5 is unlikely going to premiere anytime soon. With an indefinite hiatus in the horizon, will BBC order a less time-consuming project, such as another special episode, just to remind fans that the hit series is not going away for good?
Cast member Louise Brealey recently revealed to RadioTimes that there were previous talks about making another special episode, presumably, prior to the release of “Sherlock” season 5. However, with the hectic schedules of showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, even this one seems to be left floating in the air, too.
“I know originally there was a hope that we would do a special down the line. I haven’t heard that that’s on or off,” Brealey revealed while discussing possibilities for the show other than the actual “Sherlock” season 5. “To utilise two clichés, I think it’s on the very back burner and not necessarily on the cards.”
A special episode is not new in the franchise. When the series was looking at its longest break ever between seasons 3 and 4 that lasted from 2014 to 2017, fans were treated the 93-minute long “The Abominable Bride” episode. So for the producers to consider doing the same strategy before “Sherlock” season 5 is not too surprising.
Most of the cast reprised their roles in the present timeline of the BBC series. However, “The Abominable Bride” was mostly set in Victorian England or the 19th century. It was released on New Year’s 2016, the second-year mark of the hiatus at the time, or exactly one year before season 4’s premiere. Considering that Moffat and Gatiss have just started with the filming of BBC’s upcoming miniseries “Dracula,” a special release before the anticipated “Sherlock” season 5 is unlikely happening in the coming months or year.
Meanwhile, Brealey reiterated that Moffat and Gatiss are preoccupied with the “Dracula” project that makes it impossible for them to plot “Sherlock” season 5. But the actress assured fans she and fellow cast member Una Stubbs, who plays Mrs. Hudson, are both looking forward to going back to Baker Street in the future.
