“Sherlock” Season 5 is still one of the most eagerly awaited installment in television history despite the fact that the chances of it happening is bleak at best. As of now, new information about a potential fifth season is scarce as those who are involved in its production are too busy with their own projects.
However, show creators remain optimistic that the show will return one day. They previously expressed their amazement that people are still hoping for a “Sherlock” Season 5 given the series hasn’t been on the air for nearly two years.
"Whether we ever get to Chapter Two - our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers - rather depends on our two stars. I'd be slightly surprised if we never made it again. But I've been surprised before,” co-writer Steven Moffat said. Even Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) said that it’s “galling” to imagine that he’ll never play the titular detective again.
As opposed to other shows that have been shelved by a network due to performance decline, the crime drama series didn’t suffer from such a dilemma. Moffat even said that its likely BBC is going to order a “Sherlock” Season 5 given the phenomenal ratings of the previous installments.
Right now, the biggest obstacle standing in the way of the fifth installment is Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (Dr. Watson). To be precise, it’s the respective contracts and commitments of the two that is proving difficult to maneuver. Apart from their MCU contracts, Martin and Cumberbatch are also involved in other projects that are taking up much of their time. Theoretically, if the actors do find the right schedule someday, it’s entirely plausible that they’ll do “Sherlock” Season 5.
This is especially true since the stars are huge fans of the series themselves. If that day comes, Moffat said that the next hurdle would be choosing what stories to include. Right now, it’s speculated that “The Red-Headed League” and “The Engineer’s Thumb” would be included in “Sherlock” Season 5 with one more undetermined story to be discussed.
