Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe's on-screen love life is so successful that die-hard “Outlander” fans just cannot seem to accept the fact that the two are not a couple in real life. But despite fan clamor, Caitriona Balfe seems to think that she and Heughan already have a perfect relationship – at work and as friends.
In an interview with Parade, Catriona Balfe spills the beans about her experience working with Sam Heughan. According to the Irish actress, she and Heughan are each other's biggest supporters. Fans would love to know that the pair's camaraderie predates the show they are best known for.
Caitriona Balfe mentions that her and Sam Heughan's close friendship started even before “Outlander” filmed its first episode. The actors had already made a promise to each other to always support one another through thick and thin while the pair was in London before production for the show started.
Despite their friendship, Caitriona Balfe emphasizes that Sam Heughan and she are polar opposites of each other when it comes to personality. The “Outlander” actress mentions that when going through issues, Heughan tends to be more calm while she tends to be particularly bullish if something frustrates her. But Balfe does mention that Heughan also has a tendency to be passive, which she has no problem helping him out with a push from time to time.
When asked about the possibility of romance happening between her and Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe dismisses the possibility by pointing out that only a small fraction of the “Outlander” fandom has stuck to their guns about wanting to see her and Heughan together. Balfe points out that she appreciates how vocal the group is as it stands as “a testament” to the characters they portray.
Fans of Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe will just have to accept that Jamie and Claire Fraser's romance, no matter how inspirational, will simply take a back seat to Heughan and Balfe's personal lives. Fans looking forward to seeing Heughan and Balfe together again can catch “Outlander” season 4 when it airs its premiere episode on Nov. 4.
