The characters of Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe in the TV series “Outlander” are likely one of the most followed on-screen romances at the moment. But no matter how much fans would like them to be together in real life, the fact is, Balfe is currently engaged while Heughan is rumored to be dating a long-time friend.
Heughan and Balfe are rarely seen or photographed with their real-life partners. However, the actor has been rumored to be in a romantic relationship with “Twin Peaks” star Amy Shiels.
Earlier this year, Us Weekly reported that Heughan and Shiels have been sharing a “flirty friendship” for the past 10 years. However, the publication cited having "multiple sources" that confirmed their will they-won't they relationship finally led to a romantic relationship a couple of months ago.
It was also noted that several fans have been speculating that they are an item since 2014 but the actors never really confirmed any of the reports. Meanwhile, Shiels is yet to make an appearance in Sam Heughan’s social media pages since they were reportedly dating. Caitriona Balfe’s co-star has also not mentioned anything about Shiels in the previous weeks or months despite going on many press events for promoting “Outlander” season 4.
However, it is important to note that Heughan is one of the celebrities that evidently want these matters to be kept private, which Bustle noted was the same case with his previous relationship with “The Bold and the Beautiful” alum MacKenzie Mauzy. But Balfe’s TV husband was seen with Mauzy on several occasions during red carpet events or in photos, he posted on Instagram. But, generally, he maintained their alleged relationship on the down-low.

While Heughan’s real-life love affair is quite vague to fans, Balfe is clearly in love with her fiancé Tony McGill. The actress was spotted wearing a diamond ring earlier this year, which she gladly confirmed is an engagement ring from her beau.
Like Sam Heughan’s rumored relationships, fans will find very few photos of Caitriona Balfe and McGill together online. But the actress recently confirmed that she is still happily engaged, though, her busy schedule between filming and promoting “Outlander” season 4 apparently kept her from starting the wedding plans.
