Bughead shippers are probably feeling a little nervous after watching the latest episode of “Riverdale” Season 3. Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) relationship with Betty (Lili Reinhart) has always been a fan-favorite on the show, but in "Chapter Thirty-Eight: As Above, So Below," something happened and it may come between the couple in the upcoming episodes.
In “Riverdale” Season 3 Episode 3, Betty and Jughead continue to investigate the Griffins and Gargoyles game that led to the deaths of two students, Dilton Doiley (Major Curda) and Ben Button (Moses Thiessen), but the young sleuths need to get the rulebook. Unfortunately, Ethel Muggs (Shannon Purser) refuses to give them the item they are seeking, but she did invite Jughead to Dilton’s bunker.
As Jughead arrives at the bunker to play Griffins and Gargoyles, Ethel brings out two chalices and asked him to drink one. Nothing happened after he takes a drink, but Ethel tells Jughead he has to kiss her first before she agrees to give him the rulebook. Well, Jughead did as requested. After all, it’s just a kiss, right?
For some reason, Jughead didn’t tell Betty about the kiss in “Riverdale” Season 3 Episode 3. Why is that? Does it have a lingering effect on him? That is unlikely, but viewers have noted that Jughead may get into trouble with Betty if he continues to keep it a secret.
“I don’t think Jughead is suddenly in love with Ethel or anything, or even really cheated on Betty in any particular way. He may just not want to tell her because she’s already in a fragile mental state, having recently suffered a seizure (and possibly more than one),” Alex Zalben said in his article for Decider.
“That said… Keeping secrets is never a good idea, and particularly not on a show like Riverdale. The longer Jughead doesn’t tell Betty he kissed Ethel, the bigger deal it will become, until potentially it creeps out in an unexpected and dangerous way,” he added.
Will the kiss drive a wedge between Betty and Jughead in the remaining episodes of “Riverdale” Season 3? That’s something fans are dying to find out.
