For those who have already heard of, seen, or even tried the new “Resident Evil 7” VR demo, the change in direction that “Capcom” went with is no longer news. The demo was universally well-received, and most who have tried it do appreciate the change in approach by the game, returning to its survival-horror roots and away from the action-oriented gameplay of the sixth title in the series. However, there are some kinks to work out with the VR version since some are experiencing nausea when playing, and there are actually those who think that the seventh installment in the “Resident Evil” franchise is only so in name.
Firstly, let’s get the obvious similarity between the “RE7” VR demo and the “Playable Teaser” or “P.T.” that was released in connection with the cancelled “Silent Hills” game out of the way. Yes, they are incredibly similar. No one is denying this. However, no one is saying that this is a bad thing either.
As a contributor of Metro wrote, the demo plays and feels like a “Silent Hill” game and the writer expressed on compunction in saying that this insult to “Konami” is well-deserved. More than that, the drastic change in gameplay and overall atmosphere of the demo is similar to the refreshing offering that was “RE4.”
After “RE Zero,” the clunky mechanics and fixed camera angles were getting on the nerves of players who were starting to think that the gameplay was becoming tiresome. So when the fourth game in the franchise came along, with its witty characters cracking one-liners, over the shoulder gameplay, and fast-paced fighting, fans of the series were understandably blown away.
Perhaps the new iteration’s direction in going deeper in psychological terror is the change of pace that will breathe new life to the series. Coupled with the fixes that Capcom is implementing in order to maximize the comfort of players who want to play the game on VR without vomiting, “RE7” is shaping up to be the “Resident Evil” game fans sorely need.
