A Popeyes employee’s TikTok showcasing the chain's chicken seasoning process has gone viral, sparking widespread debate over food safety and preparation practices.
Viral TikTok by Popeyes Employee Reveals Chicken Seasoning Process, Sparks Hygiene and Cost Concerns
A Popeyes employee took to TikTok to reveal the seasoning process behind the fast-food chain's signature chicken, sparking a wave of curiosity and concern among viewers. The video, posted by Adrian Jimenez (@adrianjimenezz209), has garnered over 1.3 million views and offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the chicken is prepared.
In the video, Jimenez asks, "You guys ever wonder how we season your chicken here at Popeyes?" He then proceeds to demonstrate the process, carrying a large cardboard box to a table in the kitchen. "Well, let me show you," he says, explaining that he retrieved one of the chicken boxes from the freezer, opened it, and prepared it for seasoning.
Jimenez then uses a slicer to cut open each bag of chicken, flipping them to release the juices before dumping the contents into a tumbler. He mentions that he repeated this process with five cases, each containing eight bags of chicken.
After preparing the chicken, Jimenez adds a spicy seasoning mix, tossing the contents of a small red packet into the tumbler. He then smears the seasoning over the chicken, covers the tumbler with a lid, and turns on the machine to let it mix. "That’s all it is to it. Let me know what you guys want to see next," Jimenez concludes as he removes his gloves.
The video quickly drew reactions from viewers, some of whom expressed interest in taking the seasoning packets home. In contrast, others raised questions about the cleanliness of the tumbler and the chicken itself. One user asked, "How often does the tumbler get cleaned?" Jimenez responded, "After it’s used."
Another commenter, who identified as a former Popeyes employee, noted that in their experience, gloved hands served as the tumbler. In contrast, a retired General Manager remarked that the chicken was supposed to be cleaned during preparation.
While some viewers were concerned about the process, others were more focused on the cost of the chicken, with one commenting, "I just want to know why a two-piece costs $37.99."
Debate Over Washing Chicken Reignited as Popeyes Employee Addresses Viewer Concerns with Humor
The discussion around whether chicken should be washed before cooking also resurfaced in the comments. Despite some viewers questioning Jimenez for not rinsing the chicken, the practice of washing raw poultry has been widely debunked. According to a 2017 Buzzfeed article, experts, including a USDA representative, discourage washing raw chicken due to the risk of spreading bacteria. The USDA recommends cooking chicken to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill bacteria rather than washing it.
In a follow-up video, Jimenez showed how the chicken is organized after it comes out of the tumbler. Referring to the earlier concerns about cleanliness, his caption humorously read, "I’ll promise I’ll wash the chicken next time," accompanied by laughing emojis. He also acknowledged a viewer's comment that suggested those who believe chicken needs to be washed are misguided, signaling his agreement with a heart emoji.
