Blizzard’s famed multiplayer online shooter Overwatch is turning one-year-old come May 24th, but the studio has been relatively quiet about its Anniversary Event. This could have something to do with the mini professional league that it is launching called Overwatch Contenders, which is meant to be a springboard for amateurs to join the world of professional e-sports.
Back in November of last year, the Overwatch League announced, which was basically an e-sports league that was meant to have teams in cities fight each other via official matches, Polygon reports. Since then, Blizzard has been hard at work in laying down the foundation to have its own primetime slot in the e-sports industry.
With the Contenders event, amateur players could compete and win cash prizes. They could also catch the attention of actual professional teams that are on the lookout for new blood with heaps of talent. These teams now come with backers who are interested in having a stake in the budding market.
In any case, the first matches are set to begin on June 3rd. Players who are interested in joining can sign up at the official Contenders website where further details are available.
Now, the mini league isn’t the only event that Blizzard has lined up for the short term since its Anniversary Event is supposed to launch tomorrow. As Forbes noted, however, the company has been uncharacteristically quiet about the whole thing.
Aside from the trailer about the event that it released, which was basically just a mashup of everything that the company did over the course of the year, nothing about the upcoming celebration has been announced. Then again, perhaps this has something to do with Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan’s recent Reddit revelation with regards to events.
The Overwatch boss basically said that he wanted to scale back on big-budget developments and instead focus on the ones that were already released. This should make for an interesting Anniversary Event if only to see what Blizzard has in store for fans.
