The announcement of “Overlord” season 4 is probably one of the most awaited events by anime fans around the world. Unfortunately, some clues could be suggesting the release date of the next season will not be heard of for a long time.

'Overlord' season 4 renewed or canceled: New episodes likely getting released but not anytime soon

In the discussion of “Overlord” season 4, there are two main points to consider. The first is if the anime will be renewed for another installment. And if it would be, when will the new episodes arrive.

There was a report that “Overlord” season 4 was confirmed at an anime conference in Germany earlier this year. But it was quickly dismissed by fans who are at the said event. It turns out what anime writer Yukie Sugawara said at AnimagiC convention was that the anime continuation is “extremely likely.” However, there was never an explicit announcement about the fourth season.

As for the release date, this is likely a more painstaking topic to unravel. The season 3 finale left fans with the message, “The story continues.” But it was not an official announcement of “Overlord” season 4. To some fans, they felt like it was more of an encouragement to follow the story through the light novel series written by Kugane Murayama with illustrations by so-bin.

Some fans have even suggested the likelihood of “Overlord” season 4 getting axed. This way, more followers of the series would be inclined to read the light novel series.

'Overlord' season 4: Delay is imminent with not much new light novel installments?

The adaptation pace from seasons 1 through 3 has been consistent as Madhouse uses three light novel installments per season with 13 episodes. But this also shows quite an obvious dilemma for “Overlord” season 4.

The light novel has only 13 volumes available, with the 14th installment expected to be out in early 2020. There were reports that Murayama is planning to end the series in volume 17, but there are still no reports about the timeline of release dates for volume 15 onwards. “Overlord” season 4 should cover volume 10 to 12, but the tricky part is volumes 12 and 13 complete a two-part arc.

Hypothetically, season 4 could still have a finale with a huge cliffhanger if a 2020 release date is pursued. However, it would leave the series in an awkward position, especially considering there will not be enough source materials to release season 5 immediately. Fans should then be ready to wait for a few more years for “Overlord” season 4.
