“Overlord” Season 4 is expected to deliver an even bigger overarching conflict as has been confirmed by author Kugane Maruyama. Although there has been large-scale war depicted in the previous releases, it pales in comparison for what’s to come, MonsterAndCritics reported.
“I have some vague ideas floating around, for example; there are multiple countries in the middle of the continent, and they will eventually make an alliance and will fight against the floor guardians in a huge war,” Kugane elaborated. “And the reason for making Gargantua is to make it fight a company of golem cavalry.” The conflict ballooning is a sign that the author is gunning for an ending, something that will be hinted in “Overlord” Season 4.
Kugane said that he doesn’t plan on dragging the story despite having 50 volumes worth of ideas bouncing around his head. Instead, the entire series will come to a close around the 20th volume. “Overlord” Season 4 is expected to adapt volume 10 to 13, which offers a considerable challenge for Madhouse studio.
The complication stems from the fact that it will be impossible for Madhouse to cram the stories of those volumes in “Overlord” Season 4 given the vastness of its plot. Volume 12 and 13 alone is a two-part story that has 410 and 574 pages respectively.
So far, the studio has fallen into a pattern of adapting three books per season. Given the information provided above, this formula will no longer work. This leaves Madhouse with two options. First, they could cram the story of volume 10 to 13 in “Overlord” Season 4, which means they’ll be cutting a lot of scenes in its source material.
Second, they could wait until volume 15 comes out and have “Overlord” Season 4 be a two-cour release. The first cour will tell the story between 10 to 12, while the second will depict 13 to 15. The problem is that volume 15 hasn’t been released yet and there’s no telling when Kugane will finish the story.
As such, there are two release dates that are being speculated by the fan base. If Madhouse chose to opt for the first option, “Overlord” Season 4 will be coming out sometime this year, possibly a late 2019 release. If they settle for the second option, the fifth installment could come out sometime in 2021 at best, which would surely irk the fans. If the studio opts for the second choice, they would do well to improve the animation of the series as there were a lot of issues regarding this front in the third entry.
