‘Outlander’ Season 3 Features a “Different Jamie” as Hinted by Star Sam Heughan; Deviates from Original Novels

Sam Heughan plays Jamie on Starz' 'Outlander'

‘Outlander’ season 3 is set to feature a “different Jamie” as hinted by lead actor Sam Heughan. The series will also deviate slightly from the original novels.

During an interview with Pop Sugar, Heughan teased that the much-anticipated third season of the historical time-travel series will feature slight deviations from the original novels authored by Diana Gabaldon. The 36-year old Scottish actor, who plays the protagonist Jamie Fraser, revealed that it was a challenge to follow the novels to the letter.

He said, “We always try to stick as close as we can to the books, but obviously it's hard to make a book episodic. I think there is going to be stuff in there that the fans will recognize since we put in as much detail as possible, but there's some really incredible moments. Certainly the beginning of season three is a slight deviation from the book.”

Heughan also revealed that the beginning of season 3 will feature Jamie’s fate following the Battle of Culloden. He said, “We're going to be showing a bit of Culloden, and what happened to Jamie. You're going to see it, and I think it's important since we talked about this battle, and that the Highlanders are doomed, and that they might be wiped out. It's a reward for the fans.”

He continued, “There's one moment in particular that I didn't even know we were going to shoot, and I know the crew didn't, and everyone was like, "What the hell is this?!" There are some big surprises, but there are also some great moments from the book that we try to stick to as much as possible.”

Heughan also teased that his character will essentially avoid being the old Jamie. He said, “To live is not part of the plan, and certainly without Claire, it's even more so not what he was expecting. He has to learn to fight again, and find purpose in his life.”

Joining Heughan in season 3’s cast are returning actors Caitriona Balfe as Claire Fraser/Randall, Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield, and Sophie Skelton as Bree Randall. According to News Everyday, new faces include Tanya Reynolds and Hannah James as the Dunsany sisters, César Domboy as an older version of Fergus, and Lauren Lyle as Marsali, one of Laoghaire’s (Nell Hudson) daughters.

‘Outlander’ season 3 is currently in production and is expected to return to Starz on April 2017.
