SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 09, 2017 -- OpsRamp, the hybrid cloud IT operations management company, announces the results of a survey on enterprise public cloud adoption. The survey, completed in October, sought to understand how IT leaders in companies of 500+ employees were using cloud services, and the impact of cloud on their businesses. Read the full report here.
An interesting finding of the report is that rapid adoption of cloud services is leading to a new type of enterprise that’s comfortable with a ‘cloud-first’ approach. IT leaders are using cloud scale assumptions for business and IT investment decisions to drive greater efficiency, innovation, and productivity. Here are five takeaways from the report:
#1 - Losing Datacenters, Gaining Cloud. Our survey found that every organization was using some type of cloud service. 90% of organizations were using public cloud for at least a year. Enterprise cloud adoption still has tremendous runway: 84% plan to move more workloads to the cloud within the next two years.
IT practitioners are looking for help on cloud management best practices. 71% believe they are still at the emerging or developing stages of cloud maturity. Only 29% think their cloud practices have reached a state of maturity.
# 2 - The Rise of Cloud-Native Infrastructure. How are enterprise IT pros using cloud services today? 40% use cloud infrastructure services for production, while 33% were using cloud tech for development and testing.
Behind the rise of cloud native infrastructure is a desire for greater flexibility and scalability, according to 62% of survey respondents. 47% pointed to the ability to avoid capital expenditures on hardware, software, IT support and security. Another 47% cited usage-based pricing models that enable agile and nimble decision making.
# 3 - Tech Budgets Get Cloudy. Cloud tech adoption isn’t just lip service anymore–companies are putting money where their wallets are. 60% of respondents said that more than 30% of their organization’s current IT spending is on public cloud services. 27% said that over 50% of IT spend would be on cloud in the next few years.
The opportunity to save money by using public cloud was another driving factor. 94% said cloud infrastructure would reduce setup and maintenance costs. 55% believe their IT costs would drop by at least 30% from the use of cloud infrastructure.
# 4 - Multi-Cloud Is The Order of The Day. Organizations are taking a pragmatic approach to cloud procurement. The vast majority (75%) expect to work with different cloud providers for their business needs. When it comes to Infrastructure as a Service platforms, AWS isn’t the only game in town. In order, Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud Platform are the most popular choices.
# 5 - What’s Stopping Cloud Adoption? So, can anything slow cloud adoption in the enterprise? Maybe. IT pros pointed to ongoing security concerns, a lack of resources, and migration challenges as the primary reasons for not using more cloud services. Meanwhile, the biggest challenge for public cloud management is ensuring security and compliance for cloud workloads.
“The survey results are consistent with what we’re hearing from customers and partners,” says Varma Kunaparaju, co-founder and CEO. “Cloud is becoming a bigger part of their IT portfolio, they’re likely to use more than one cloud platform, and oversight and management of cloud services is paramount. We expect these trends to accelerate over time, as the cost, scalability and flexibility advantages of cloud services become even more obvious.”
