As one of the longest-running manga and anime properties in the world, “One Piece” has carved a huge place in the hearts of industry fans. However, as with everything, the journey of Luffy and his friends must come to an end. Based on what the creator of the property, Eiichiro Oda says, it would seem that the conclusion to this story is almost here. Let the waterworks commence.
In a recent appearance on Japan’s “Honma dekka!?” TV program on the Fuji TV network, Eiichiro Oda discussed the inevitable end of “One Piece.” As Anime News Network reports, it would seem that the manga will only go over about 100 volumes, which is already causing a wave of concern among fans. After all, the manga is currently in its 92nd volume, which leaves roughly around 10 to 20 volumes remaining before it all ends.
What’s more, it was revealed that Oda will be changing the ending of the manga if a fan manages to guess the one he already has in mind. This is typical of the “One Piece” manga creator who is known for his rather eccentric behavior. He was also asked if the titular One Piece treasure that Gol D. Roger left behind and that Luffy is looking for will be a different kind of treasure from silver and gold.
In response, Oda said that it would not. “One Piece” is a manga about a search for actual treasure with real monetary value. In this regard, the creator truly does separate himself from other storytellers who prefer to go with a more emotional direction.
"That's like the ending of The Wizard of Oz, which I watched when I was a kid,” Oda said. “Adventuring that long, and having the adventure itself be the treasure, is really dissatisfying. Those kinds of stories are impossible. It feels like, 'I've gone on this long adventure, so give me the treasure!'"
