A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the Northeast, prompting governors in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts to declare states of emergency and impose strict travel restrictions. Forecasters warned that the region could see up to 24 inches of snow accompanied by strong winds, creating dangerous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.

By early Sunday afternoon, the storm had already caused significant air travel chaos. More than 15,000 flights were delayed nationwide, while at least 3,500 flights were canceled. The highest number of cancellations occurred at major New York-area airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. Travelers were urged to check flight statuses and prepare for extended delays as the winter weather intensified.

In response to the severe snowstorm, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered the closure of city streets to non-essential vehicles, including bicycles and scooters, from 9 p.m. Sunday through 12 p.m. Monday. All public school buildings were also closed to ensure student and staff safety. Officials emphasized that limiting traffic would allow snowplows and emergency crews to operate more efficiently during the height of the storm.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont implemented similar safety measures, banning commercial vehicles from state highways starting at 5 p.m. Sunday. In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency, restricted non-essential travel, and activated up to 200 National Guard members to assist with emergency response efforts. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also mobilized 100 National Guard members to support operations in Long Island, New York City, and the Lower Hudson Valley.

Authorities across the Northeast are urging residents to stay off the roads, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor local weather updates as the winter storm continues to impact millions.
