North Korea has strongly criticized the United States’ newly announced Golden Dome missile defense shield, calling it a “very dangerous threatening initiative,” according to state media outlet KCNA. The remarks come in response to President Donald Trump’s May 20 announcement selecting a design and leader for the $175 billion program.
The Golden Dome initiative aims to deploy a global network of satellites equipped with advanced sensors and missile interceptors, designed to detect and neutralize threats shortly after launch from adversaries such as North Korea, China, Iran, or Russia.
North Korea’s foreign ministry, via the Institute for American Studies, denounced the program as “a typical product of ‘America First’,” accusing the U.S. of arrogance and unilateralism. The ministry further described the project as a provocative “outer space nuclear war scenario.”
The Golden Dome system has already sparked international concern. Last week, China expressed “serious concern” over the program and urged the U.S. to abandon the project, warning it could escalate global tensions and provoke a new arms race in space.
The U.S. claims the Golden Dome will strengthen global security by providing a new layer of defense against missile attacks. However, critics argue it could destabilize international relations and increase the militarization of outer space.
As the United States moves forward with the ambitious missile defense strategy, global powers are voicing growing resistance. The controversy surrounding the Golden Dome highlights increasing geopolitical friction over the use of advanced defense technology and space-based military infrastructure.
