“Nioh 2” has been making waves in the gaming community recently as Team Ninja is ramping up the marketing campaign for the game. Of course, with first entry already setting the stage for its successor, the developers aren’t having a hard time bringing hype to the sequel.
While the strength of “Nioh 2” comes from its battle mechanics, difficult gameplay, and challenging boss fights, the story is also another element that makes it more engaging. Sure, it’s not as well-written as the “The Witcher 3” or “The Last of Us,” but it’s intriguing nonetheless.
Producer and director Fumihiko Yasuda recently spoke with Dengekionline about “Nioh 2” and one of the things they talked about was the game’s plotline specifically if the narrative has been made to branch out like other games that offer multiple endings.
Nioh 2 is actually a prequel
“[Nioh 2] is not multi-ending, but there are some differences in the reaction of military commanders between men and women,” Yasuda said. “In addition, the content of the mission may change due to the actions of the main character, so the game experience will vary considerably depending on how you play.”
Although “Nioh 2” is the second entry for the series, its story is actually a prequel. The main protagonist is a historical figure who’s a warlord intent at battling Yokais.
The enemies in the game are heavily inspired by monsters found in Japanese folklore. For instance, the recent PlayStation Access demo of “Nioh 2” showed a human-like horse Yokai called Mezuki, one of the in-game bosses. The official Twitter page of the game explained that this monster often appeared in Hell Scrolls and is part of the endless horde of supernatural creatures found in the region.
Nioh 2 could arrive on February 2020
“Nioh 2” has kept some of the elements that made the first game quite the hit, while adding new features such as a Yokai transformation and a variety of weapons and armors. The game is also inspired by the “Dark Souls” franchise so expect to hit the deck a lot.
With regards to its release date, Team Ninja has yet to reveal anything. “Nioh 2” will have an open beta starting on Nov. 1 and ending on Nov. 10. The game will likely come out in February 2020 as the original game also hit the shelves during this month, Polygon reported.
