Loyalty issues have always hounded NBA teams and how they handle their players. And judging by past events, Kevin Love can be on the receiving end of these, similar to what Blake Griffin and DeMar DeRozan experienced.
It can be recalled that the Los Angeles Clippers signed Blake Griffin last summer, giving the high-flying forward a five-year $171.1 million contract. By doing this, the team sent out a message that they had no plans of tanking and that Griffin would become the new face of the franchise, Inquistr reported.
However, the Clippers performed poorly in the regular season and they got run over by dominant teams in the Western Conference. As such, they sent Blake Griffin over to the Detroit Pistons in January and started bringing in new faces. The same could happen to Kevin Love if the Cavs’ regular season doesn’t go as planned.
While there is no denying that Kevin Love is a terrific player, his skills aren’t equal to Lebron James, who can carry a team to a championship contention. And it’s safe to say that the Clippers were thinking the same way about Blake Griffin, otherwise, they wouldn’t have sent him packing.
Right now, the Cavs are still in a good position as they still have enough cap space to acquire other talents to support Kevin Love. But there is still the glaring fact that its roster has some improvements to make, with Tristan Thompson and JR Smith still in their lineup.
What’s more, it’s going to be difficult trading both these players as their contracts are huge and their performances don’t necessarily reflect those numbers. So if Kevin Love doesn’t want to end up like Blake Griffin being traded to another team, then he’ll have to play his heart out and then some in the upcoming regular season.
