Microsoft to roll out bitcoin currency format support for Excel in 2017

Technology titan Microsoft officially announced last month its plans to add new features to the upcoming Office 365.

Martin Butler, account executive at Microsoft, made the announcement in an online post. In particular, Butler listed five features due to arrive sometime in 2017, which, among others, includes support for digital currency bitcoin.

“Microsoft has laid out an aggressive rollout plan for 2017. New features for Office 365 will be released every month during the year, and if your enterprise is in the fast track program, you'll be seeing the new features very soon indeed”, he said.

With the addition of bitcoin support, Excel will be able to recognize, format, calculate, and analyze numbers expressed in the digital currencies, according to the blog post.

“The new feature will be available for Excel running under Windows 10, Android, Mac OS, and iOS, and will include Excel Mobile versions as well”, Butler said.

In March 2016, the Office 365 roadmap detailed Microsoft’s plans to roll out ‘Bitcoin Currency Format Support’ to Excel 2016. According to the official website, following features are still in development:

  • Bitcoin Currency Format Support for Excel on Android

  • Bitcoin Currency Format Support for Excel on Windows Desktop

  • Bitcoin Currency Format Support for Excel on Windows Universal

  • Bitcoin Currency Format Support for Excel Online

In addition to bitcoin support, other features to be released this year include real-time transcription and translation of Skype Meeting Broadcast, conditional access policies for locations and apps, new data gathering and shaping capabilities for Excel, and OneNote improvements for classroom and collaboration.
