Although Michael Saylor continues buying Bitcoin, he appears to be prioritizing balance-sheet repair activities and capital preservation efforts. After purchasing only 334 BTC ($28.7 million) for the week ending October 4 compared to 1,665 BTC ($142.7 million) last week, compared to 84%, MicroStrategy has started to shift its financial priorities. The firm still sports an impressive amount of BTC, namely, 848,000 BTC costing roughly $63.97 billion. However, its management team appears to value financial stability and capital preservation more than accumulating as much crypto as possible.
It appears that MicroStrategy has turned its attention to other short-term goals, including minimizing the number of shares and obligations as much as possible, alongside cutting out unnecessary expenditures, in order to fund the next leg higher in its Bitcoin hodling campaign. The reason behind this assumption is that the company spent around $176.3 million repurchasing 1.77 million STRC preferred shares—overshadowing its weekly Bitcoin budget by more than sixfold—while drawing $142.5 million on its preferred equity program during the last fiscal year, in order to pay dividends and interest on its debt. Also, the preferred-equi funding “flywheel” has slowed down considerably, as the firm stops issuing new STRC notes in favor of common stock sales and cash accumulation. Essentially, it replaces a “digital credit” expansion plan with a “digital gold” accumulation scheme.
The fact that the mNAV premium is near 1.07x suggests that there is little sense in raising additional funds via preferred equity. The strategy the management is currently following involves using the largest possible amount of cash to buy as much Bitcoin as possible, while also minimizing the cost of future capital raises and preserving the capacity to raise funds in the future. It will do that by retaining a substantial amount of cash, namely, $5.71 billion. This way, the company will be able to maintain its flexibility and minimize risks associated with refinancing obligations and minimizing future dividends. As far as investors are concerned, they should keep a close eye on the company’s ability to reduce its liabilities and the load on the share price, as well as whether it will resume its Bitcoin buying binge as soon as its cash reserves reach an acceptable level.
