BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has announced that Flop Labs plans to launch its FLOP testnet within weeks, introducing a blockchain network designed to support artificial intelligence (AI) computing. The upcoming 90-day testing period will determine eligibility for the project's genesis airdrop, rewarding miners, validators, and AI agents based on their participation.
However, Flop Labs has not confirmed an official launch date. According to its website, the testnet rollout depends on meeting technical readiness requirements, with possible extensions if development milestones are delayed.
Hayes, who took charge of Flop Labs in August, shared the update following TOKEN2049 Singapore. The project aims to establish a decentralized marketplace where AI agents purchase computing resources using FLOP tokens.
Unlike Bitcoin's traditional proof-of-work mechanism, Flop Labs introduces a proof-of-useful-inference system that compensates GPU operators for completing actual AI processing tasks.
Participating miners will receive block rewards and a significant portion of inference fees. Validators will verify completed computing activities, while AI agents must spend test tokens to access network services.
The testnet will use tokens without monetary value, ensuring participants earn rewards through measurable contributions rather than simply holding assets.
Additionally, validators will compete for 1,000 mainnet positions based on their performance during the testing phase.
Flop Labs incorporates several Bitcoin-inspired tokenomics features. Blocks are expected to be produced approximately every second, with miners receiving 96 FLOP per block.
Mining rewards will decrease by half every 730 days, significantly faster than Bitcoin's four-year halving cycle.
According to a September draft, FLOP's total supply could reach approximately 18.1 billion tokens over 10 years, with 24.3% allocated to the genesis airdrop.
Hayes has also emphasized that the project will operate without venture capital allocations or presales, claiming he personally financed its development.
He believes FLOP could eventually surpass Bitcoin in network value, citing Reed's Law and the potential expansion of decentralized AI computing.
Nevertheless, the project's Yellow Paper remains at draft version 0.5.0, and several economic assumptions are provisional.
Flop Labs also faces competition from established decentralized computing platforms, including Render and Ocean Network.
Ultimately, the FLOP testnet will provide an early assessment of whether Hayes' blockchain-based AI computing model can attract meaningful participation and sustainable demand.
