First lady Melania Trump attended what would ultimately become a very chaotic first presidential debate between her husband Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden. Even though the debate was centered on the candidates, Melania also garnered criticism of her own through the way she greeted Trump after the proceedings.
It is long known that the Trumps are not exactly the most affectionate of first couples in modern politics today, and that was seen when the debate concluded when the spouses joined their husbands on stage. Melania went to greet Donald and was only seen stroking his arm, while he did the same to her in response a few times.
Their manner of greeting each other was a stark contrast to how the Bidens greeted each other. Former second lady Dr. Jill Biden greeted her husband with a long hug. Dr. Biden was also wearing a mask when she joined him on stage, whereas Melania was not wearing a mask throughout the event, only prior to the debate.
This difference was quickly noted on social media, with many users noting how cold the first lady seemed to come off towards her husband. Some commented that the Trumps were only slightly affectionate when they saw Joe and Jill Biden greet each other. However, some only commented that the first lady is different whenever her husband is not present.
Meanwhile, Melania’s former friend and adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff released audio records of the first lady expressing her displeasure at being criticized for her husband’s policies in separating children from their families at the border at the same time having to do the traditional duties that come with being the first lady.
“They say I’m complicit. I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough I don’t do enough where I am,” Melania was heard as saying.
“I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and the decorations? But I need to do it, right?” said the first lady, who went on to cite an Obama administration policy that was different from her husband’s, which was that children could be separated from their parents if authorities raised concerns over the child’s well being or could not confirm if the adult is their legal guardian. The Trump administration policy turned this into a blanket policy - until a federal judge ordered the administration to cease.
