“Lucifer” season 4 will debut on Netflix this year. But moving on to a new platform ultimately changed the showrunners plans for the upcoming installment.
Netflix’s decision to pick up the series after being canceled by Fox was a major win for fans who rallied on social media to #SaveLucifer. But more changes are in order, especially with the confirmed episodes count for “Lucifer” season 4 as the streaming service company initially ordered for 10 episodes only.
Obviously, this will affect the original plans of co-showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich “Lucifer” season 4. The duo revealed to TVLine that the upcoming season will only feature the first part of the what they originally intended for the whole season 4 arc. “We were going to have two parts to it anyway, so we’ll just tell a really strong, gnarly first part,” Modrovich said.
The decreased episode count for “Lucifer” season 4 might sound like a tiny disappointment but Henderson sees an advantage to it. He explained, “[It] lets us concentrate the story and focus it, and that’s what’s really exciting about this. We have a really strong first half that is now going to make for an amazing story.”
There are also advantages in having Netflix as “Lucifer” season 4’s main distributor. For one, they will not have to wait for weeks to see how the story develops because all episodes are going to be released at once on the season premiere. Moving to a streaming platform also removed some of the restrictions in a TV network. “Things like my bum, which I was never allowed to show before, and lots of people want to see it … There will be multiple bum shots,” Tom Ellis previously told fans.
Netflix has yet to announce the official release date of “Lucifer” season 4. But when Aimee Garcia, who plays Ella Lopez, was asked about it in January, she told fans, “I have no idea... but if I had to guess I’d say April or May.”
The actress also recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo with other cast members as they work on a “top secret mission.” It is being speculated they could be filming promo videos, such as a release date announcement for “Lucifer” season 4.
