‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2: Nicole Kidman Willing to Return as Celeste for "Powerful" Storyline; Reese Witherspoon Teases Working with Writer for Ideas

Nicole Kidman plays Celeste on HBO's 'Little Big Lies'

‘Big Little Lies’ season 2 is speculated to be renewed on HBO. Actress Nicole Kidman, who plays Celeste on the miniseries, admitted that she was willing to return on one condition. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon teased working with original novel writer Liane Moriarty for new ideas.

Kidman revealed during a recent interview with Variety at the Cannes Film Festival that she was willing to return as the character Celeste on a second season of HBO’s television adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name but on grounds that the storyline be “powerful.”

When asked about reprising her role for a second time, she replied, “If the storyline could be powerful and compelling. If there is a way to form these women’s lives further, that’s really interesting. It would be so lovely if we could do it.”

Kidman played the abused wife of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard) in season one. She also worked as executive producer alongside co-star Reese Witherspoon, who portrayed Madeline Martha Mackenzie.

The 49-year old multi-award winning actress and producer also talked about the reactions she had from viewers of the series regarding Celeste and Perry’s relationship saying, “…people would want to reach out and touch me. I got so many emails and people talking to me about it, which I like because it’s a really complicated relationship. I obviously understand it, so I’m able to talk about it in complex detail. It’s so based in shame, and the desire to protect her husband and family.”

During another interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Kidman was pressed for details regarding a possible second season to which she replied, "It's definitely being talked about, but it takes a lot of work to get it to where we want it. We are just so thankful that people have responded in the way they have. It's such a rare occurrence."

Meanwhile, Witherspoon may have coyly and indirectly confirmed season 2 by posting a photograph of herself with co-stars Kidman and Laura Dern on Instagram. According to Vanity Fair, the image was captioned, “Spending #SundayFunday with these ladies ... working on some new lies.”

She also fueled speculations when she appeared on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and expressed optimism for a follow-up. She admitted, “I mean, I feel like it’s — Nicole and I produced as well, so we’ve been talking to the writer, Liane Moriarty, who wrote the book, about just new ideas of what these characters could do… But it seems like people just love the characters, so hopefully we can go on.”

‘Big Little Lies’ is a miniseries airing on HBO that premiered last February 2017 and concluded on April. All seven episodes from season 1 were directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, who also directed Witherspoon in the 2014 feature film ‘Wild.’
