Italy's 5-Star Movement calls for blockchain use in public sector

The 5-Star Movement, Italy’s biggest opposition group, is pushing for blockchain technology to be used in streamlining public services, Reuters reported.

Founded in 2009, 5-Star rose quickly to become Italy’s main opposition party. It presents itself as a clean alternative to mainstream parties tainted with corruption probes.

5-Star has called blockchain a "fundamental topic" and believes that the technology has the potential to bring more trust in the public sector.

According to a draft seen by Reuters, the group has plans to propose a law in January in the Lazio region, forcing the local government to use blockchain to streamline and bring more transparency to some of its activities. If successful, it would mark the first law in Italy to incorporate the use of blockchain in government.

5-star councillor Davide Barillari told Reuters that the group also intends to introduce the technology in a regional healthcare reform.

Last month, Five Stars Movement leader Beppe Grillo said in a statement, “We’re working on a project, the so-called Blockchain for the encrypted information. It is very interesting- you have an algorithm and there are no intermediaries. If the Blockchain could be used in politics that would be very interesting...” (As quoted by CoinTelegraph)
