“In the Dark” season 3 is happening as it was renewed in May. Its co-creator, Baran Boodar, announced the show’s return and stated that it would be the last run. The renewal of season 2 was said to be quite surprising as no one expected that it would be one of the most popular original series on Netflix.
The show debuted in 2017, and the sci-fi thriller gained viewers as the episodes go by. On the detail that it will be ending in the third season, Boodar explained that since the beginning, it was their plan to have just three installments, so it is confirmed that “In the Dark” season 3 will present the final episodes.
Third season finale
On his social media, the series’ co-creator relayed that they have already reached the finale and working on it. “It‘s official! We are working on Dark Season 3,” he wrote. “It is the final cycle of this great journey. We always had three seasons in mind when we developed Dark and are happy to tell you that we will start shooting the third and final season in 4 weeks so we can deliver you guys the final chapter of Dark next year.”
“In the Dark” season 3 will still feature German cast like the first two chapters. It is also expected to have more viewers since the story is ending and the audience has to know where the whole storyline will lead them.
What will happen in the next episodes?
Season 2’s finale showed Jonas (Louis Hofmann) traveling to another dimension. He was brought to a world that tells the story according to this now-dead girlfriend Martha (Lisa Vicari). “In the Dark” season 3 will show how the lead traveler lived when his ex was still alive. Plus, it was mentioned that the focus on this installment would change to the other main character - Ulrich.
"We’re going to see a bit more about grown Ulrich also the same as we did in Season 2 where we put a little bit focus on different characters like Claudia and Egon, we're going to do the same in Season 3 and call some people up that had smaller parts," co-creator Jantje Friese told Indiewire in a separate interview.
Filming, cast and release date
The cast was not officially confirmed yet, but it was said that there would be dead characters who will be back since “In the Dark” season 3 will feature many traveling to the past and the feature. This means that most of the cast members including Jonas (Louis Hofmann), older Jonas (Andreas Pietschmann), Magnus (Moritz Jahn), Martha (Lisa Vicari), Franziska (Gina Stiebitz), Bartosz (Paul Lux), Katharina (Jordis Triebel), Noah (Mark Waschke), Charlotte (Karoline Eichhorn) and Hannah (Maja Schone) will be back in the upcoming season.
Also, those who survived the apocalypse such as Elisabeth (Carlotta von Falkenhayn), Peter (Stephan Kampwirth), Claudia (Lisa Kreuzer), Noah (Max Schimmelpfennig)and Regina (Deborah Kaufmann) will be returning as well. Filming of “In the Dark” season 3 is already ongoing, and it is predicted to arrive on Netflix in 2020.
