Impossible Foods announced that it will finally be releasing its vegan sausage to grocery stores, and the consumers will start seeing them on the shelves starting Wednesday. The product initially debuted in June but was only available in restaurants.
Impossible Foods’ sausage was used in Burger King and Starbucks menu at selected US locations at that time. And now, everyone can try the plant-based sausage at home as it will be in grocery stores now.
According to CNBC, some of the grocery outlet chains that will carry the Impossible Sausage product include Safeway, Albertsons, Kroger, and Stop & Shop. The “meatless” sausage was made using the same ingredients from Impossible Burger.
This means that it also has soy leghemoglobin that was produced from genetically modified yeast. This particular ingredient makes the sausage and other meat products taste and smell like real meat.
For the nutritional value of the Impossible Sausage, it has 30% fewer calories and 47% less fat compared to the regular item made from pork. The company also made it with 79% less water. Customers can enjoy the sausage in two flavors which are spicy and savory.
“At Impossible Foods, we’re intent upon delivering on what consumers demand from meat, but without the compromise inherent in the use of animals for food production,” Dennis Woodside, Impossible Foods’ president, said in a press release. “With our latest Impossible Sausage product for retail, we’re doubling down in our efforts to reach every home cook looking to satiate their cravings for sausage. We are excited to see what consumers cook up.”
Meanwhile, Food Business News mentioned that Impossible Sausage was made to look and taste like pork sausage. This new meat alternative is certified gluten-free, and aside from the soy protein, it was made with sunflower oil, coconut oil, and seasonings such as onion, garlic, and other spices.
The spicy variant has chili flakes and cayenne, and for every 2-ounce serving of the Impossible Sausage, there are 7 grams of protein, 9 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, and 130 calories.
The sausage will be sold in 14-ounce rolls at the grocery outlets across the United States.
Finally, Woodside said that their Impossible Sausage may be sold next to its rival, Tyson Foods’ Jimmy Dean sausage, in some stores. For this, he said: “It will be interesting to see how sales go in both of those locations in the supermarket because those are different buyers with different intentions.”
