IHOP is entering the plant-based game, and its first "meatless" sandwich is already in the testing phase. The restaurant that specializes in breakfast food items unveiled its vegan sausage and egg sandwich this week.
IHOP's new food item is still testing the plant-based sandwich, so it is only available at one store at this time. Customers can purchase the new menu at Flip'd by IHOP in New York City.
As per Fox Business, IHOP may be releasing the sausage and egg sandwich to its other locations if the testing is successful. Fans may get to taste this new product in restaurants across the country once the trial phase ends with good results.
In any case, the new sandwich is called the Plant Based Cali, and this is IHOP's very first vegan breakfast sandwich. This was made with Sweet Earth's vegan sausage patty and JUST Egg's mung bean-based egg. The menu is served with toasted tomatoes, avocado, and arugula.
The arrival of this new food item took time as the restaurant company shared it spent more than two years developing the Plant Based Cali sandwich. It was created at IHOP's test kitchen facility, and food experts worked together for this. The company is still planning to release more new items that will be exclusively sold at the company's Flip'd stores.
Flip'd was originally announced in 2019, but its formal launching was put on hold as the COVID-19 pandemic struck. This brand is IHOP's latest addition to its line of fast-casual restaurants. Flip'd stores were designed for take-outs, but there are also locations that have indoor or outdoor sitting areas for dine-ins.
Customers can buy the usual IHOP foods at Flip'd, such as wraps, grab-and-go salads, drinks, and baked goodies. It offers a range of menu options for lunch and dinner as well, and this consists of hamburgers, sandwiches, burrito bowls, and more.
Meanwhile, VegNews mentioned that the Flip'd by IHOP in New York is operated by Bryan McKenzie, who is a vegan. Thus, the addition of Plant Based Cali to his store made him excited.
"Consumer demand is shifting to healthier menu options, specifically plant-based items," the IHOP franchisee told VegNews. "So we decided that Flip'd was the perfect fit to introduce this new menu item."
