When employees are on the job, one of the most common questions is "what's for lunch?" While they have various options, most will choose to visit their company's cafeteria or dining hall. Therefore, you want to make sure the area provided them is one that is fantastic in many ways, since this is a key component in keeping staff morale high. To make sure your employees take advantage of their workplace cafeteria, here are some ways you can make it the place to be during lunch and breaks.
Make it Convenient
Since your employees will be busy completing many important tasks during the day, you should always make sure your on-site dining area offers plenty of convenience. According to a 2010 study by Right Management, it was found that over 20 percent of workers skip lunch altogether or choose to brown-bag it and eat at their desks. Rather than have this happen day after day, offer your employees an on-site restaurant-style dining area. By doing so, they can not only get some great food while relaxing during their lunch hour, but also save time and gas money by not having to drive around to find a good place to eat.

Offer Great Food
Needless to say, the food offered in your workplace cafeteria should be fantastic. To make this happen, you can do several things. To begin with, remember that since you have a diverse workforce, people will have varying tastes and preferences when it comes to food. Since more and more people are into eating healthier meals, make sure your company's dining area has plenty of fresh fruit, smoothies, and salad bars. Also, many companies today, including Google and Microsoft, are offering various international dishes that are chef-inspired. But finally, also remember that you'll have plenty of employees who may simply want a burger and fries or a slice of pizza, so don't forget these when creating your all-star cafeteria.
Keep the Prices Reasonable
While you will want to make sure you have a wide variety of food that tastes great and appeals to everyone, you also need to remember to keep the prices in your dining area as reasonable as possible. If you don't, even the best-tasting food will be ignored by your employees. In many instances, workplaces that regularly charge high prices for eating on-site find employees rarely use the cafeteria. In addition, this can be an issue that leads to low employee morale. To reduce the chances of this happening, you may want to follow the lead of other employers and decide to subsidize your employee's cafeteria purchases. While this may cost your company some additional money, the goodwill that will result may prove to be far more beneficial in the long-run.
A Comfortable and Relaxing Atmosphere
Since your employees are working very hard, they are looking forward to their lunch break. If you want to make sure they will be refreshed and ready to go for the remaining hours of their workday, make sure you provide them with a dining area that is comfortable and very relaxing. As for ways to do this, you can offer such amenities as very comfortable chairs and tables, a coffee shop, wireless and fast internet connection for business and marketing meetings, and maybe different styles of music playing softly in the background. These, coupled with a variety of great food, will help promote social interaction among your employees. As a result, you'll likely start to see employees who work in various departments and rarely interact while on the job suddenly develop new friendships, which will help increase morale and productivity.
Once you implement these changes within your workplace cafeteria or dining hall, you and your employees will be happy with the results. Along with the increased morale and productivity within your company, you will also find employees who are not only eager to arrive at work each day, but also eager to see the arrival of lunchtime.
