The fate of “High School Musical 4” is still in the air. Among the major reasons why Disney opted to leave the film as a trilogy is that the main casts aren’t interested in reprising their roles.
As such, the company has opted to create a TV series as a substitute for “High School Musical 4.” Disney’s president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh said that while it was exciting to develop the spin-off series, there were difficulties along the way that gave them pause, Digital Spy reported.
“The challenge we handed the creative team was Herculean. How do you recapture the joy and the magic of the original ‘High School Musical’ movie… and simultaneously reimagine it completely? That's like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded. And Tim and Oliver – and this amazingly talented and diverse cast and crew – have done exactly that!” While this may be reassuring for some, others are still skeptical of the claim, with most preferring to see a “High School Musical 4” instead.
There’s also the previous statement of Ashley Tisdale to consider. According to the actress, what truly made the franchise stand out is the friendship of the cast that they’ve cultivated through the years of making the trilogy. Yes, there’s no doubt that the series will have its moments, but completely capturing the charm of the original films will be quite the feat. As for news about “High School Musical 4,” Disney hasn’t announced anything yet.
This is disheartening given that groundwork for the movie has already been put in place 10 years ago. Marsh himself has given the announcement for the fourth film but years have passed and “High School Musical 4” has never moved into its production stage.
With regards to the reception that the series will receive, that is also up for debate given that Disney hasn’t released it yet. The company will be airing the 10-episode musical drama on its own streaming service that will come out this year. Hopefully, it can live up to the hype that “High School Musical 4” would’ve brought as the franchise is one of the most beloved stories that Disney has ever told.
