Heatwave: How to stay cool when you're working from home?

It is summer thus it is bound to get hotter and with weather forecasted to reach as high as 32C, heatwave conditions are guaranteed.

This is not a problem if you are working in an office with air conditioning.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, many have been working from home and continue to do so while restrictions are eased one by one with careful study by the government’s medical team.

This is also good if your home is equipped like your office, meaning it is comfortably air-conditioned.

But, if your home is insulated so it can remain warm during the winter, the heatwave condition is bad news.

Despair not because there are ways that you can make yourself comfortable.

First off, make sure that you keep your house cool by blocking the sunlight from getting into your home. You can do so with curtains, or shutters or blinds, whatever work for you.

Carefully choosing your clothing also helps. Choose clothes that are light and loose-fitting, as these will make you comfortable. Clothes that are made of cotton or linen will also help because these are breathable fabrics. You can also choose clothes that are light in colors because they will help you keep cooler.

Another way to be comfortable while working at home in heat wave conditions is to change your working hours. You can start early when the sun is not yet high up and the heat is still tolerable. That way you can get a lot done before you have to take a break when it gets too hot.

But, if you need to work through the heat, you can cool your pulse points from time to time by maybe putting cold towel on the back of your neck or maybe a bag of frozen peas on your wrists or back of your knees.

And, if you have a fan, improvise because a fan alone will just push hot air around and it will not make you comfortable. What you can do is freeze water in a two liter bottle and put it between you and the fan. That way, the air that will be coming from the fan will be cooler.

Whatever you decide on to make your working from home conditions comfortable, always make sure to hydrate. Keep a stock of cold water inside your ref so you can just get up anytime and get a cold drink.

So, you see, you do not have to suffer in heatwave conditions.
