Hanwha Group invited reporters to its shipyard on the island of Geoje last Friday to unveil efforts to automate up to 70 percent of shipbuilding processes.
By leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital innovations, Hanwha aims to revolutionize the industry.
Virtual Reality Spray Training Center Enhances Skills
Inside the shipyard, the Virtual Reality Spray Training Center stands as a testament to Hanwha's commitment to skill improvement. Here, they can practice and refine their spray-gun techniques, elevating their skills to new heights, as per Korea Times.
Despite these advancements, Hanwha Ocean acknowledges that the current workforce does not adequately address the labor shortage at domestic shipyards. To combat this challenge, the Smart Yard Operation Center employs drones and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to monitor test operations and block transportation.
Additionally, Hanwha is developing an AI system to automatically detect shipbuilding blocks, further streamlining the production process.
Enhancing Productivity and Safety with Digital Technologies
Hanwha Ocean's smart yard research team proudly states that their focus extends beyond mere productivity improvements. Embracing digital technologies, they prioritize safety management.
With more than 80 robots deployed across ten sectors of shipbuilding, including specialized welding robots, Hanwha advances resilience against labor shortages and minimizes industrial accidents. Notably, lightweight welding robots have empowered female operators in the traditionally male-dominated field.
Amid the innovation showcase, Hanwha solidifies its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The highlight of this effort was the No. 1 dock, where construction of four liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers took place. Hanwha Ocean employed LNG instead of liquefied nitrogen for testing, offering an operational environment simulation while prioritizing eco-friendly practices.
Another critical initiative by Hanwha Ocean is the study of "sloshing" prevention - the movement of liquid inside containers that can lead to wall damage. Through rigorous research and development, Hanwha aims to enhance vessel safety and protect cargo integrity during transportation.
Collaboration with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
Continuing its journey towards digital transformation, Hanwha Ocean concluded a basic accord with the Houston-based American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
KED Global reported that this partnership will focus on testing and verifying digital production technology, cybersecurity, self-navigation, and smart ship solutions. The company envisions leveraging digital shipbuilding technology to boost output efficiency by 2026.
