Recode recently reported that Google had cancelled a virtual reality headset project that would have been a direct competition to products like the “Oculus Rift” and “HTC Vive.” However, it would seem that the search engine giant actually has a lot of other projects in the works related to augmented reality and virtual reality technology that are still alive. As such, techies can still look forward to an innovative gadget by Google that will give them a unique experience that won’t involve “Pokemons” or other video games.
According to Engadget, sources at Google confirmed that the particular project that was meant to be the VR headset that would take on the “Oculus Rift” and the “HTC Vive” in the particular niche industry they belong to has been axed. However, the sources also said that the company has other projects in the works that also has to do with VR and AR, as well as hybrids involving both technologies.
Supposedly, one of the headsets they are working on allows users to experience AR without the use of a computer or a smartphone. This means that the headset itself will have its own integrated, front-facing camera that will superimpose images on real-world surfaces so that users can interact with them.
The “Daydream” project is still alive as well, with Google intending to make the mobile VR platform one of the offerings that it will be introducing to users in the future. Multiple teams are working on this project as well, even though it’s not planned to be the main attraction by the company.
Google has made no comments on this particular development, Ubergizmo reports, and there are only speculations at this point as to what the future of VR/AR projects will be unveiled by the company. As it stands, Google doesn’t seem to have any current plans to compete with Oculus and HTC.
