Global geopolitical Series: Tensions flare as Trump recognize Israel’s claim over disputed Golan Heights

Rockets flying amid air raids,

  • Tensions flared in the Middle East along the border of Israel as the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump recognized Golan Heights as the sovereign territory of Israel.
  • Militants fired more than 60 rockets into southern Israel and in response, the Israeli military carried out hundreds of strikes in the Gaza Strip overnight Tuesday. According to Israeli defense force (IDF), IDF fighter jets, combat helicopters, tanks, and naval vehicles on Tuesday morning attacked additional terrorist targets in a military compound belonging to Hamas in the central Gaza Strip and a military compound belonging to Palestinian Islamic Jihadist group.
  • It is clear that the Egypt-broker cease-fire agreement was violated by both parties and it may continue for some time further. However, as of Tuesday morning, both sides have indicated willingness to abide by the cease-fire despite Tuesday’s violation.

Trump handed Golan to Israel,

  • US President Donald Trump signed a declaration on Monday recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the disputed but strategically important region. Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.
  • While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was exalted by the decision, the majority of the United States’ Middle-Easter allies opposed the decision.
  • Saudi Arabia denounced the recognition and called the move as negative for the peace process in the Middle East.
  • Syria, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Turkey - all joined in to protest the move.
  • United Nations’ Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced the despite U.S. recognition, the status of the Golan has not changed as per the UN.
