Global geopolitical Series: Clashes still reported in Yemen as UN brokered truce begins on Tuesday

Clashes are still reported being reported in Yemen despite UN-brokered truce agreement kicked in since Monday midnight.  Pro-government officials told AFP news agency that clashes were ongoing in the east of the Red Sea city, which is used as a crucial gateway for humanitarian aid.

On Monday, the United Nations said the deal was agreed following talks in Sweden last Thursday between Yemen's Saudi-backed government and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels that secures an immediate ceasefire in the port city of Hodeida, and surroundings. Many around the world are hoping that this ceasefire agreement would finally lead to a permanent peace agreement that would put an end to one of the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century.

The Saudi government has come under intense criticism in recent times over its war in Yemen, and especially after the murder of prominent reporter Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Outraged over the incident, the U.S. lawmakers recently passed a proposal that calls for an end to the U.S. support for its ally Saudi Arabia in its war in Yemen and considers crown prince Muhammad bin Salman as the main man behind the journalist’s murder.
