Global Geopolitical Series: Two Koreas set to formally apply to co-host 2032 Olympic

In an ongoing improvement of peace prospect in the Korean Peninsula, which would formally put an end to the Korean War, on Friday, the officials from both North and South Korea formally agreed to submit their bid to co-host the 2032 Olympic Games. The two sides reached that agreement during their sports talks in the North's border town of Kaesong. This was the first such talks in four months. The two sides have also agreed to send joint teams at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Since President Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and after meeting between leaders of the two Koreas earlier this week, the two sides have engaged in extensive social, business and military talks and have taken steps to end hostility towards each other.

North Korea has also affirmed its commitment to denuclearize speaking at the UN if the United States take concrete steps to improve mutual trust. Now, the formal end to the Korean war and North Korea’s denuclearize rests on the next meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump, which is expected to happen after the U.S. mid-term election.
