The Chief of Iranian nuclear program, Ali Akbar Salehi announced that Iran has built a factory that can produce rotors for up to 60 centrifuges a day in order to enhance its uranium enrichment capacity. The news comes at a time when the geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran has hit a boiling point. At one hand, Iran has threatened that it would exit the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), better known as the Iran nuclear agreement after U.S. exit from the deal if other parties such Russia, China, and The European Union fails to protect Iran’s interests amid sanctions, and on the other President Trump has announced that his administration would impose harshest of sanctions on Iran.
Mr. Salehi announced that the new factory does not in itself break the terms of the 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers and is in line with a recent decree by Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to reach 190,000 SWUs (separative work units) of uranium enrichment capacity. Iran supreme leader Ali Khamenei has ordered Iran’s nuclear agency to make all the necessary preparation to start enriching Uranium necessary to build an atomic weapon should the deal gets ultimately killed.
Salehi also said that the country's effort to acquire uranium has resulted in a stockpile of as much as 950 tons. Iran has imported some 400 tons of the stuff since the 2015 nuclear deal, bringing its stockpile between 900 and 950 tons.
