George R.R. Martin's “A Game of Thrones” took television by storm the first time the adaptation of the series the book belongs to was broadcasted on HBO. A new legion of fans was created almost overnight for a franchise that was originally relegated to a sub-minority who had the initial patience to go through the first four books published in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.

With “Game of Thrones” sure to end with its eighth season sometime in 2019, HBO is banking on new projects set in the same universe. Thankfully, HBO has signed on to the production of the spin-offs, with George R.R. Martin himself helming their creation.

While HBO has yet to confirm the actual title of the upcoming prequel, George R.R. Martin himself has confirmed that the spin-off to “Game of Thrones” will be titled “The Long Night.” Martin namedrops the upcoming show's title in a personal post on his blog congratulating the “King Kong” actress Naomi Watts for her recent casting for the show.

Fans may find it interesting that the news about the upcoming HBO show's title came first from George R.R. Martin himself. The author had previously expressed a desire for the prequel to carry the title sometime in June when he announced that the pilot was picked up but had not expected the title to be approved by the network.

George R.R. Martin himself emphasized that the upcoming prequel will be set at least tens of thousands of years prior to the events in Westeros that is depicted in “Game of Thrones.” Martin has also emphasized that fans of his creations should not expect any of the “Game of Thrones'” previous cast to be involved in “The Long Night” and any of the other spin-offs due to all orders being set as prequels.

Fans looking forward to seeing what “The Long Night” has in store for “Game of Thrones” fans will have to sit tight for a bit until the production details of the upcoming sequel are finalized by HBO. Hopefully, George R.R. Martin will have more news about “The Long Night” and the other prequels sometime before 2018 ends.
