There used to be a time when gamers could reliably count on Rockstar to keep delivering high quality “Grand Theft Auto” games every year or two. However, following the rising appeal of so-called Games-as-a-Service and the increased cost of production, this could change with “GTA 6.” Not only could it potentially be the last major installment in a long time, but it could also get rid of offline play altogether.
So far, all anyone really has with “GTA 6” are rumors, PC Gamer notes. Many of these rumors are more like wish lists than anything else, but some of them have disturbing implications. Among the possibilities with the highest chance of coming true is the matter the game being the last numbered iteration. This is because Rockstar could simply keep milking it for a decade or more, as it proved it could with “GTA 5.”
When the fifth numbered installment in the franchise was launched in 2013, no one could have anticipated that it would take so long for a sequel to come out. Six years later, not even a hint of what “GTA 6” is about has come out of Rockstar or Take-Two, and this has left many fans feeling anxious. What will the game be about? Will it even feature offline play at all?
That last part is particularly disturbing to think about because a lot of players have made it clear they don’t mind just focusing on the online multiplayer aspect, at all. “GTA 5 Online” is still raking in the dough even all these years after the game’s initial release. Why wouldn’t Take-Two believe that they could get away with making “GTA 6” all about that?
Naturally, this Games-as-a-Service model in “GTA 6” will also likely come with a ton of additional contents that will be released over time. “GTA 5 Online” has been doing this and for free, at that. This is why the game has remained popular to this day and why its sequel is likely to be even more so.
