Following the success of “Frozen,” head honchos over at Disney decided to make a sequel for the animated film. “Frozen 2” is scheduled for release on Nov. 27, 2019, and there’s little to nothing that is known about the premise of the next installment, other than the date it’s going to hit theaters.
Idina Menzel (Elsa), Kristen Bell (Anna), and Josh Gad (Olaf) will be returning to reprise their respective roles. Aside from the original cast, two new additions have been tapped for “Frozen 2.” Evan Rachel Wood ("Westworld") and Sterling K. Brown ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine") will also be joining the next installment of the franchise, The Independent reported.
It’s still unknown what role the new actors are going to play since the writers have yet to finish the script for “Frozen 2.” However, there is some noise being generated by a movement on social media urging the writers to give Elsa a girlfriend.
If the writers for “Frozen 2” give in to this fan request, Elsa would be the very first Disney princess to represent the LGBTQ+ community. Jennifer Lee, the screenwriter for the film, said she loves that people are so engaged with the movie and adores that the franchise is involved in a lot of conversation in varying communities. Whether or not Lee will write Elsa as a lesbian remains to be seen.
“Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things,” Lee said in response to the “Frozen 2” noise it’s generating. "For me ... Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”
“Frozen” is the highest-grossing animated film of all time and the fifth highest-grossing film overall. Naturally, Disney is trying to handle everything with the care the franchise deserves that’s why “Frozen 2” has been in production for a long time. But given Disney’s reputation of creating quality movies, that wait may very well be worth it.
