The list of AAA video games that have been delayed is getting longer as Ubisoft adds “Far Cry 6” to it. Now, its new release date will not take place anytime before April 2021.
‘Far Cry 6’ release date suffers delay; Ubisoft blames COVID-19
Ubisoft announced in its financial report for the first half of the fiscal year 2020-2021 that the game has been removed from its original release date set in February 2021. Before the delay was announced, “Far Cry 6” would have been one of the big income contributors for the video game publisher for the said fiscal year.
However, “Far Cry 6” and “Rainbow Six Quarantine” have both been moved to a later release date within the fiscal year 2021-2022 -- for Ubisoft, that starts on April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. “Benefitting from this strong momentum and despite having moved Far Cry 6 and Rainbow Six Quarantine to 2021-22 to leverage their full potential in the context of production challenges caused by COVID-19,” Ubisoft said in its report. The publisher did not mention any specific timeline for both games, but the new release date can be set sometime next year.
IGN also reported, from a Q&A during the earnings call, Ubisoft CEO said they would have been able to deliver “Far Cry 6” on time if there was not a pandemic happening worldwide. The company is also still in the process of optimizing its operations as its developers adapt to work-from-home arrangements.
‘Far Cry 6’ gameplay, plot: What to expect
As the title suggests, “Far Cry 6” will be the sixth main installment for the first-person shooter franchise. Developers still have plenty to reveal about the gameplay, but it has been showcased that the plot is set on the fictional island of Yara. It is ruled by a fascist dictator named Antón Castillo, who is played by “Breaking Bad” star Giancarlo Esposito. Players will assume the role of guerilla fighter and Yara native Dani Rojas.
Also central to the plot is Antón’s son, Diego, voiced by “Coco” lead star Anthony Gonzalez, who is having doubts about following the footsteps of his father. The “Far Cry 6” will introduce a new Fangs for Hire system where players would be allowed to recruit companions to accomplish campaign missions. The game will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, Amazon Luna, and Stadia.
