Over the past week, the gaming community has once again revisited the debates on how cross-generation releases are tackled by game publishers. Possibly to avoid any confusion, Ubisoft has once again announced its plans for the upcoming “Far Cry 6.”
The game’s official Twitter page posted on Wednesday that players who will purchase “Far Cry 6” on PS4 and Xbox One are getting the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions “at no additional cost.” The same tweet has a link that redirects to the game’s pre-order page, where Ubisoft also made the offer clear.

The link for the PS4 purchase has a note that reads “upgrade free to next-gen,” while there is a separate button for buying the title directly for PS5 consoles. Ubisoft has combined the links for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S “Far Cry 6” purchases with the same message.
On the same purchase page, Ubisoft confirms that the game is designed to utilize Microsoft’s Smart Delivery tech. “‘Far Cry 6’ leverages the Smart Delivery technology - buy the game once and play it on either Xbox One or Xbox Series X when both the console and that version of ‘Far Cry 6’ are available,” Ubisoft wrote. Meanwhile, players who will get “Far Cry 6” in disc or digital form on PS4 will both get the game’s PS5 digital version. Those who will purchase the Blu-Ray version must keep the disc so they can upgrade the game later on.
The cost of next-gen upgrades became a hot topic recently when Sony and Guerilla Games initially announced that the “Horizon Forbidden West” free PS5 upgrade was only available in the more pricey pre-order editions. Sony later backtracked and made the upgrade for free for all PS4 purchases. But the company also announced that all upcoming first-party cross-gen titles will require a $10 upgrade fee. The situation with Xbox is different due to the availability of Smart Delivery.
“Far Cry 6” will also launch on PC and is confirmed to support ray tracing if players have the right PC specs for it. Ubisoft has already announced the different sets of system requirements that will let fans play the game in different settings once it arrives on Oct. 7. The game will be available on Google Stadia and Amazon Luna as well.
