Elon Musk’s xAI to Build Oracle-Powered Supercomputer, Expands Grok to Europe

Elon Musk reveals xAI’s supercomputer plans and Grok’s European entry.

Elon Musk revealed that xAI plans to construct a supercomputer, partnering with Oracle, to enhance its AI automaton Grok. The company targets operational status by autumn 2025.

Building a Future with Oracle

In a recent communication with investors, Musk unveiled xAI's ambitious plan to construct a supercomputer. As reported by The Information on Saturday, this technological marvel is set to power the next generation of its AI automaton, Grok, marking a significant stride in the company's journey.

As per the report, Musk envisions the proposed supercomputer to be operational by the autumn of 2025. In a move that could reshape the AI landscape, he alluded to a potential game-changing partnership between xAI and Oracle to develop this colossal computer, signaling a significant strategic shift in the company's trajectory.

xAI cannot be reached for comments at this time. Oracle declined to comment in response to Reuters' request.

The AI data center chips market is currently dominated by Nvidia's H100 family of powerful GPUs. These are in high demand and can be challenging to procure, underscoring the industry's competitive nature.

Musk established xAI last year to compete and excel in the AI market, challenging the dominance of Google and OpenAI, which Microsoft supports.

Supercomputer to Power Grok 3

Musk said earlier this year that training the Grok 2 model required roughly 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. He also stated that training the Grok 3 and later models will take 100,000 Nvidia H100 processors.

The Information quoted Musk from a May presentation. It stated that when finished, the interconnected chip clusters—Nvidia's flagship H100 graphics processing units (GPUs)—would be at least four times bigger than the largest GPU clusters now in use.

Grok's European Expansion

Furthermore, a recent development for X is that Grok is finally being released in the European market.

Coingape reports that this introduction is an element of a larger initiative to make sophisticated AI tools available globally. Despite its extensive distribution, Grok has not yet become accessible to every user in Europe, indicative of a gradual and systematic approach to its launch.

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, the parent organization of xAI, touted this expansion as a pivotal development. This action is anticipated to promote the integration and adoption of AI in a broader range of industries, potentially impacting global policies and strategies regarding AI.
