Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a complicated relationship with artificial intelligence, which is only rivaled by his complicated relationship with actual people. In a rather startling revelation that some might find hilarious, it would seem that the tech billionaire and the Canadian musician Grimes started dating thanks to a joke about a malevolent AI.
Apparently, the romance started when Musk discovered that Grimes had made a joke about an equally interesting AI topic called Roko’s Basilisk, Page Six reports. According to a source who spoke with the publication, Musk was recently about to Tweet a joke about the subject when he found out that the musician had done so before him a full three years before.
“Elon was researching the idea of joking about Rococo Basilisk, and when he saw Grimes had already joked about it, he reached out to her,” the source said. “Grimes said this was the first time in three years that anyone understood the joke. They were both poking fun at AI.”
Back in 2015, Grimes shot a music video for her song Flesh Without Blood and in the video, there was apparently a character called Rococo Basilisk, which she herself created. Apparently, no one else got the reference until Musk reached out to Grimes to talk about the subject. It would seem that one thing led to another and during the recent Met Gala, the pair walked together to show off their newly-formed relationship.
As adorable as the central story of this piece may be, however, the side-topic is actually quite a bit less so. For the AI community and many futurists, Roko’s Basilisk is actually a terrifying concept that is capable of driving some people to madness, Futurism notes.
It’s an idea that was proposed way back in 2010 on the website LessWrong by the user Roko. It’s basically a quandary where a malevolent God-like AI provides people with a choice to either ensure its creation before it is created or face eternal torment. The concept proved so dangerous that until now, it is thought of as a forbidden topic within certain AI circles.
