Dongwon F&B, a subsidiary of Dongwon Industries, introduces a 100% plant-based canned ham, expanding their My Plant Original lineup and marking a significant stride in the vegetable protein movement.
Dongwon F&B said that through its latest plant-based ham product, it is gearing up to become a total protein provider, especially to vegetarians. Moreover, the company is launching this meat alternative while moving towards the popularization of vegetable-based protein options.
As per The Korea Times, Dongwon F&B said this is the company's third plant-based food item added to its My Plant brand. Previously, it created dumplings and tuna-flavored food without any meat ingredients. These were introduced in March this year.
The My Plant Original canned ham is 100% plant-based, meaning it was made with pure vegetable ingredients. It has no cholesterol and offers the lowest calories compared to rival products in the South Korean market.
Also, compared to Dongwon F&B's Richam luncheon meat, My Plant version's calories are less than 40%. With only 175kcal per 100 grams, it has the lowest calories among the domestic canned hams sold in the country.
"We are promoting various forms of collaboration with different companies based on our competitiveness in mass production infrastructure and independent technology for canned ham products," an official of Dongwon F&B said in a statement. "We will lead the popularization of meat alternatives by targeting overseas markets with our export infrastructure."
Korea's Daily Impact reported that to produce the My Plant Original meat alternative, Dongwon F&B combined technology and the know-how it accumulated in more than 20 years while producing its Recham ham products.
Finally, the company did not just manufacture a plain plant-based canned ham, but Dongwon F&B ensured the product also conforms to the healthy diet trend. With this said, My Plant Ham is perfect for health-conscious customers, too.
