Now-former President Donald Trump has been known to speak highly of Queen Elizabeth II, the long-reigning monarch of the UK. However, a 2018 interview hints at how the Queen really felt about him in a comment she made.
In the ITV documentary titled “The Queen’s Green Planet,” the monarch was seen walking along the grounds of Buckingham Palace with renowned environmentalist Sir David Attenborough. As they roamed the gardens, the Queen talked about the trees she had planted for each of her children and joked about the helicopters that were heard flying in the skies. ITV reporter Chris Ship then claimed that as the helicopters were flying over the palace, the Queen turned to Sir David with what appeared to be an uncomfortable expression.
“That sounds like President Trump,” said the Queen, while pointing up at the sky at the continued sounds of the helicopters. Sir David laughed at the minor swipe the Queen made at Trump.
During his interview with Sir David, Ship noted that it was unusual for the Queen to suddenly make a reference to the former president. Upon Sir David’s confirmation of the remark, Ship went on to explain that he believed it was unusual especially as Trump is not someone who believes in climate change. Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement during his term, a move that Joe Biden revoked shortly after getting sworn into office during inauguration day.
The Queen very rarely comments on politics, seeking to maintain an apolitical stance which the Royals are now known for. However, according to Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, the monarch may be privately relieved that Trump is no longer the US president and that a relationship with Biden may be much easier given their shared values, especially on climate change.
Previously, Trump established his “Office of the Former President” in Florida, following his predecessors. So far, Trump’s office has announced the former president’s endorsement of former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s gubernatorial bid in Arkansas. A statement following the establishment of Trump’s office said that this is where the former president will manage his correspondence and public statements as well as appearances and official activities to further push his administration’s agenda even after his term.
