Last week, Tesla unveiled a new all-electric Semi truck and the Roadster 2.0. Apparently, this was not enough since the company is now getting into the gadget scene with a new product called PowerBank. It’s exactly what it sounds. It’s a small battery-charging unit that can recharge mobile devices from practically every maker.
Other portable battery charging units for charging mobile devices were already called power banks, so calling its product PowerBank is a bit on the nose. On the other hand, this kind of product seems like it’s aimed at Tesla enthusiasts more than anyone else. Being made up of a 18650 cell, it only offers an energy capacity of 3350mAh, TechCrunch reports. That’s only enough to charge most mobile devices once.
It costs $45 as well, which is cheap for a Tesla product, but a lot more expensive than what generic power banks offer with the same energy capacity. This is likely going to be a deal breaker for those who choose their portable charging units based on price, capacity, speed of charging, and general usefulness.
However, for those who love everything Tesla and want something of the company to bring with them everywhere they go, it makes for a nice novelty item. What’s more, it comes with several connectors that are compatible with microUSB, USB, and even the Lightning connector for iPhone users, Value Walk reports. As such, there’s no need to get other cables just for compatibility.
The bottom line is that the PowerBank is not meant to be like the PowerPack or the Powerwall, which offer significant power for their sizes. It’s not a product for everyone and is certainly not being marketed as such. In fact, it’s not being marketed at all and likely serves as an interesting detail meant to serve those loyal to the company.
