The Deutsche Fussball Liga (DFL) and EA SPORTS have announced an early extension of their longstanding partnership. This agreement ensures that the collaboration will continue for an additional two seasons until 2027, building on a relationship dating back to 1998.
According to a press release, the renewal guarantees exclusive license rights for match simulation to EA SPORTS, making the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 an integral part of the popular EA SPORTS FC video game series.
Enhancing Authenticity
As part of the deal, EA SPORTS will retain full rights to present the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 in their football simulator, providing authentic gameplay experiences to millions of video game enthusiasts worldwide. Sportcal noted that all 36 clubs, players, and even the German Supercup will be realistically represented in the game, cementing EA SPORTS' role as the go-to platform for football simulation.
Not only will EA SPORTS continue to serve as the Bundesliga presentation partner for prestigious awards like the "Player of the Month" and "Player of the Season," but it will also collaborate with clubs to create engaging marketing campaigns. This comprehensive partnership sets the stage for continued growth and strategic importance between the DFL and EA SPORTS.
Pioneering the Virtual Bundesliga
The DFL and EA SPORTS partnership has constantly evolved over the past 25 years. In 2012, the DFL launched the groundbreaking Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) in collaboration with EA SPORTS, making it the first professional football league to integrate an official eFootball competition into a football simulation game. With up to 130,000 participants per season, the VBL has become immensely popular, engaging fans worldwide.
Recognizing the success of the VBL, the DFL and EA SPORTS initiated the VBL Club Championship in 2018. This move further elevated the competitive and immersive nature of the game. The DFL's Members Assembly officially incorporated the VBL as an eFootball competition for the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 in May 2022, emphasizing the league's commitment to staying at the forefront of technological integration.
Strengthening Fan Engagement
DFL Co-CEO Steffen Merkel acknowledges that EA SPORTS FC deepens the connection between millions of fans, their favorite players, and clubs from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.
On the other hand, DFL Co-CEO Marc Lenz emphasizes the importance of reaching new audiences and attracting young fans to the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.
For his part, Cam Weber, President of EA SPORTS, excitingly affirms that through their renewed partnership with the Deutsche Fussball Liga (DFL), they will bring the passion, intensity, and excellence of one of the greatest football leagues in the world to fans worldwide.
