While “Cyberpunk 2077” players are still waiting for the game’s first expansion, they might want to check out the upcoming animated series based on the RPG. Netflix, the company that will exclusively stream the anime, recently released a trailer for “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” to also announce when it will premiere.
The new trailer is rightfully labeled as NSFW content, but it shows just how the “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” shares the same vibe as the video game, which features some bloody and raunchy cutscenes. By the end of the new trailer, Netflix announced that the anime series would be released on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” offers a spin-off take on “Cyberpunk 2077,” so video game fans should expect to see new characters. When the series was announced in 2020, ahead of the game’s release, CD Projekt Red said the 10-episode series would feature a “standalone” story. While the series will revolve around new faces and a new plot, it is still set in Night City so the show should still feel familiar to people who played the RPG.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is created by the Japanese animation studio Studio Trigger and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi. They are famous for their original works “Kill la Kill” and “Promare,” which both saw critical and commercial success. So if anime fans are not familiar with “Cyberpunk 2077,” the studio’s work may be enough reason to give the upcoming series a try. CD Projekt Red is also involved in the series as a producer.
When the series was first announced, Netflix and CD Projekt Red shared the show’s official blurb that says it will tell a “story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future.” The main protagonist decides to be an edgerunner to survive, which the blurb describes as “a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
As for the video game, CD Projekt Red has announced it is already working on the “Cyberpunk 2077” expansion that will introduce a new storyline for the game. The expansion is slated to be released sometime in 2023.
