‘Captain Marvel’ producer Kevin Feige confirmed that Brie Larson’s outing as the titular heroine in the upcoming standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will be an origin story.
According to the A.V. Club, screenwriter Nicole Perlman previously admitted that they were trying to avoid turning Captain Marvel’s first ever big-screen outing into an origin story. Perlman explained that because Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel shares more or less the same backstory as DC’s Green Lantern, Marvel would want changes done to make Carol’s story share cohesiveness with the rest of the MCU films.
She said, “If you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen… We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time.”
The film was officially in the works at Marvel since 2014 and it was announced shortly after that Perlman would be preparing the screenplay together with Meg LeFauve. Since then, not much has been disclosed of the film’s developments.
Producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently confirmed at a press conference after a sneak preview of footage from ‘Doctor Strange’ that the upcoming film starring Brie Larson in the title role would be an origin story after all.
According to Collider, Feige said, “I think Benedict [Cumberbatch] is one of those ways. Benedict is an amazing actor and totally different than Hemsworth and totally different from Downey. And, we want to stay true to who he was in the books. The metamorphosis of what he goes through is more drastic than Tony [Stark] and that was fun to chart.”
He continued, “I guess Black Panther isn’t really an origin story since we saw him already in Civil War, but his stand alone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world which you never saw before. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin story from the start.”
Although the film is yet to find a director, it is already set to be released on March 8, 2019 - a few months before the release of the yet untitled planned fourth Avengers film. This makes it highly likely for the superheroine to join Earth’s mightiest heroes then.
‘Captain Marvel’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film starring Brie Larson in the lead role. It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures world-wide and in the United States.
